Scholarships For High School Students

graduation hatsIf you are considering a college education, it is wise to consider all the scholarships for high school students. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, the average cost of a college education is getting more expensive every year. If you’re considering a public two-year school, tuition plus expenses could be as little as $10,000, but when you up the ante to attend a private, nonprofit four-year school, tuition plus expenses could cost as much as $35,000 per year.

If you want any chance of attending the school of your dreams, it’s important to be strategic when applying for scholarships for high school students. You can use the following tips to apply for scholarships successfully to get the financial aid you need to finish your education:

  1. Begin searching as early as possible. Most high schools encourage seniors to begin applying for scholarships at the beginning of the year. But to get an extra edge on the competition, don’t wait until you have applied for colleges to start searching for scholarships.

If you are a true go-getter, you can begin researching and applying for scholarships that you are eligible for as early as your freshman year in high school. Every little bit counts, and your financial assistance could quickly add up if you search for scholarships all four years of high school.

  1. Create a resume of your accomplishments. Of course, competition is fierce for even the smallest college scholarships. Even if you have an excellent GPA and have participated in a variety of afterschool activities, you still need to present yourself well in order to be awarded a scholarship. This is excellent practice for entering the career world after you graduate college.

Create a single page resume of all of your accomplishments thus far; this may include published essays, awards, and volunteer activities with afterschool organizations. When you organize your accomplishments clearly, it will help you to stand out in a sea of competition when applying for a scholarship.

  1. E-mail the office of undergraduate admissions at the school of your choice. Once you have your sights set on the school of your dreams, browse through their website or e-mail them directly to find out more information about specific scholarships they may offer.

Smaller schools may have fewer options available, yet you may have a better chance of winning a scholarship at a small college. This is the perfect time to use the resume you have created to showcase your accomplishments since colleges are attracted to unique, well-rounded students when handing out free scholarship money each year.
